He Usually Knows If You’ve Been Good

He chuckled to himself, just soft enough so as not to wake the sleeping cat by the fireplace. He was done earlier than ever before. If it wasn’t so wonderful, he’d be worried!
…But then… he was worried.
He had magic on his side and yet his work was a whole evening’s ritual, not the mere hour he’d spent tonight.
He pulled out the list of Good Boys & Girls. That is when he saw the scroll, usually a mile long, literally, torn mere feet into the list. He swallowed and frowned. He had many steps and chimneys to retrace.
