Tomorrow sees the start of “A Closer Look.” Right now, the intention is for the feature to be three things:
- A weekly feature at The Life Mosaic.
- Reflections, reviews, and recommendations.
- A conversation jumping off point for you to join in.
This may fluctuate in the future but for now, anticipate the above recipe.
Taste is subjective. What works for one person doesn’t always work for another. Yet we seek out and value other opinions. We want to know how others feel and what others think before we spend precious hours and energy and dollars into something. With “A Closer Look,” I hope to be able to offer insight into films, writing, and other creative material which has had an impact on me. Maybe I found a book to be particularly helpful or insightful. Perhaps a film made me reflect on life in a genuine, meaningful way. Or possibly a creative work impacted me long ago and I want to wax nostalgic or I’m examining an old favorite with new perspective. One week I might review the last book I read or reminisce about the first time I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark the next and let you know about an upcoming local theater production the next and so on. There’s room for all of that and more in this category in The Life Mosaic.
I’ve also started writing reviews of books and other products at Amazon and some of those may appear here. At this time, I’m focusing my Amazon reviews on books and other materials I’ve used for seminary courses and professional / volunteer ministry work. I anticipate these reviews to typically be about what I’ve found most useful and/or inspirational rather than about what material I didn’t care for and I feel more likely to write reviews on a book that has less or no Amazon reviews than many. Again, that’s how I foresee it at this moment and that may change.
Essentially, “A Closer Look” is a little corner of The Life Mosaic for me to write about great films, writing, and other creative material. What I like, why I like it, and what I think a like-minded person might get out of it. I hope it proves helpful, insightful, and interesting for you.-nm
